Experience
I earned my undergraduate degree in economics from New York University. I primarily tutor students in mathematical subjects and I am often faced with the same question. Most students want to understand why they need to know the subject matter. Why is trigonometry or algebra essential for their future? As a new tutor I would explain in depth the critical thinking skills these subjects helped promote but over time I realized this wasn't as motivating for them as I had expected. Eventually, I realized that what my students needed were real life instances in their daily life that would prove the worthiness of studying these subjects. Ever since then I have diligently sought to correlate those things they do on a regular basis with the subject they are studying. By finding a point of interest, I am given access to their lives and their dreams. I can then use this interest to create engaging lessons that will keep them interested long enough to become adept at the subject matter. I currently tutor a variety of subjects, including algebra 1 & 2, geometry, elementary math, statistics, trigonometry, pre-algebra, middle school math, and college algebra. It is my hope that each of my students leave their lessons with me with a stronger belief that math can be fun.
